Wedding Highlights

The highlights for my first HD project. This was shot on a Sony XDCAM Ex3 which is file based HD.

The workflow is pretty simple but kind of a pain when it comes time for output.

Ingesting the media is simple. In Avid MC 4 all you have to do is copy the footage to your HDD then in Avid go to File -> Import AMA volume and select your folder. Its a pretty quick and easy process.

In Avid MC 3 you have to export your clips from Sony Clip Browser as MXF files and then import them into Avid. This takes forever if you have a lot of media.

For outputting you have 2 options.

1. If you are outputting back to tape (such as DvCam) You have to make a video mixdown to SD res and then output from that. This can also be done for outputting to Dvd or Blu-ray (HD mixdown) as it is quicker than option 2

2. Export Quicktime movie - I haven't experimented to much with this but a 2 min video exported at full HD res came in at 15gbs.

Option 1 gave me a lot of problems, I kept getting decompression errors but was able to get rid of most of them by switching back and forth from timelines and freeing up some HDD space seemed to help as well. But in the end I had 1 frame that kept getting the error no matter what I did, so I ended up having cover it up with another shot.

Workspaces

One of the biggest challenges for students who are venturing into the world of video editing or motion graphics (Or anyone who is learning a new program) is to find an effective way to arrange the program so that the user can quickly find and easily access files that they require.

A lot of people have difficulty finding a layout that works for them. So here I am compiling a list of the most widely used programs.

Avid
Avid

I think the most effective way to edit with Avid is to have the timeline fullscreen on the right hand monitor, I started out having my timeline on the left underneath the composer monitor but I quickly became tired of this when I started editing more complex videos that required lots of video tracks.

After Effects
After Effects

This layout mirrors my Avid workspace, it is a layout that I have grown used to and try to mirror in all the programs I use.

Photoshop

I like having as much room as possible for the image that I am editing. This is a pretty simple layout that I haven't changed much from the original. The history and the layers tabs are actually on the second monitor.

Software I Use All The Time

Avid Media Composer - The foundation of any work-flow. From digitizing to editing to exporting to tape Media Composer is the industry leader in non linear editing.

Adobe After Effects - After Effects can do so many different things its hard to even begin to describe it. Compositing, Video effects, Colour grading and so much more. After Effects provides essential tools for any video work-flow.

Adobe Photoshop - Title cards, Retouching, Digital matte painting, Compositing photographs or creating graphic elements Photoshop has a wide range of uses and continues to gain user in an increasingly digital world.

Trapcode Particular - A very powerful plugin for After Effects that is very easy to use and can create good looking effects within a few minutes.  I use this plugin on every project I do, whether it be adding interesting elements to titles, adding elements to a background or adding an animated wipe, Particular has become an essential part of any motion designers arsenal.

Adobe Bridge - Bridge has become an essential work-flow tool allowing creative people of all types to access their media easier and quicker then ever before. Bridge allows media of all types to be import into programs quicker than using a conventional window explorer and also allows you to preview footage or graphic elements easier than opening them in their native applications.

Maxon Cinema 4D - Cinema 4D is one of the easiest to use 3D programs on the market right now. Knowing After Effects I was able to jump into C4D and start creating (Something I wasn't able to do with any of the other 3D programs on the market) And with a newly updated and easier to use dynamics simulator C4d is a powerful tool for the advanced user or the new guy who wants to start learning 3D.
